New Mexico motorists lose $2.3 billion annually (more than $1,800 per driver in the Albuquerque area and more than $1,200 per driver in the Santa Fe area) as a result of driving on roads that are deteriorated, congested, and that lack some desirable safety features, according to a new report from TRIP, a national nonprofit transportation research group based in Washington, DC.  Carolyn Bonifas Kelly, TRIP’s Associate Director of Research and Communication, will be available to discuss the findings of the report following her testimony to the House Transportation, Public Works and Capital Improvements Committee.

The report, “New Mexico Transportation by the Numbers: Meeting the State’s Need for Safe, Smooth and Efficient Mobility,” examines road and bridge conditions, congestion, economic development, highway safety, and transportation funding in New Mexico. The report contains regional data for the Albuquerque, Las Cruces and Santa Fe urban areas as well as statewide information.

Editor’s note:  Carolyn Bonifas Kelly, TRIP’s Associate Director of Research and Communication, will present the findings of a new TRIP report: “NEW MEXICO TRANSPORTATION BY THE NUMBERS:  Meeting the State’s Need for Safe, Smooth and Efficient Mobility,” at a House Transportation, Public Works and Capital Improvements Committee hearing scheduled for 8:30 to 10:30 a.m., on February 7 and will be available to meet with the media to discuss the report at the conclusion of the hearing.
