Despite increased investment in Michigan’s roads, highways and bridges as a result of increased transportation funding, the state still faces deteriorating road and bridge conditions, increasing highway fatalities, and increasing congestion due to significant increases in vehicle travel.  The TRIP report includes information on transportation projects in the Grand Rapids area and statewide that are proceeding as a result of increased investment. It also includes a list of $224 million in needed but unfunded transportation projects in the Grand Rapids area – part of the $3.3 billion in unfunded projects statewide.  Local speakers will join TRIP, a Washington-DC based transportation research organization, on Tuesday to highlight the report’s findings and discuss possible solutions.

The report, Modernizing Michigan’s Transportation System: Progress and Challenges in Providing Safe, Efficient and Well-maintained Roads, Highways and Bridges, details the impact of recent transportation funding increases and examines road and bridge conditions, travel trends, economic development, highway safety, transportation funding, and the status of needed transportation improvements in the Grand Rapids area and statewide.
